Crookedrain Review of E.P. 2007

Second release from this Irish born, Glasgow based singer who moonlights as a doctor when not recording or performing. Five songs ranging from the opening rocker “I’ll Line it Up” which has a Robert Plant rockabilly feel to it to the more sensitive “Make Calm Your Tempest” which has a mannered, at times falsetto vocal over a string backing. This vocal approach continues in “I Said I” which alternates sensitive verses and a rockier chorus with ringing guitar which takes over as the song climaxes. Closing song “The only One I Want” is voice and piano only, which approaches the type of purity achieved by Anthony and the Johnsons, vocally and lyrically. A strong effort from a man who may be able to hang up his stethoscope if he gets the right breaks.
